A recent client was requesting to have a very old computer serviced and I suggested they buy a new one. Of course the current status of the economy came up and there just is not any funds available at this time for him. I do understand his situation but expressed my concerns in this way.

Our client was using a system well over 5 years old, still running Windows 98 – which is officially no longer supported by Microsoft.

As a small businesses, it is hard to find the spare funding to consistanly upgrade equipment. But, considering that PC’s are currently so depended upon (like the tires on a car) upgrades/replacements are a necessity! This tends to be the shortfall of many small businesses.

Most business that we service, in the past, have had a history of not budgeting for new technology. It does take a bit planning and understanding of the industry to put yourself in the place to properly plan out your IT growth.

First you need to understand that running a small business has changed:

•Communication has gone video
•Mobility is not a luxury
•Security threats are increasing

One manufacturer finds that smaller businesses with 50 – 99 employees tend to have computers older than three years old almost 50% of the time.

Two problems with older computers, other than the fact that they are increasingly slower as time goes by, are:

1) Older computers experience more security threats
2) Repair costs on an older computer increases (when your hardware warranty expires repair costs increase even more) and parts are harder to locate.

The fact that older computers do not perform as fast as new computers, therefore your company will continue to fall behind the norm as other companies are consistantly challenging you for your marketshare. These young and upcoming companies are hungry, agressive and tech savy!

In addition, buying a new computer will give you :

•Additional security (with built in security for notebooks – preventing access to the operating system)
•The ability to consistantly multi-task while checking for viruses
•Provide you more ways access, protect, monitor and manage your computer

Lost productivity, security issues, improper maintenance of the computer and lack of mobility, really mean that month to month you are loosing money not only through reduced productivity but also on future sales from time wasted on dealing with antiquated equipment. This results in you giving your employees unneeded frustration and not serving your customers as best as you can.

Being mobile, having the ability to work from multiple locations and sharing those benefits with your employees are all perks in todays business world.

Don’t sell yourself short, you can afford and do deserve this functionality!
We will be happy to spend some time showing you the benefits you can immediately start putting to use!
